Lamentations 3:53Sefaria

צָֽמְת֤וּ בַבּוֹר֙ חַיָּ֔י וַיַּדּוּ־אֶ֖בֶן בִּֽי׃ {ס}

Absolute helplessness and entrapment define both personal and national suffering during times of deep crisis. Enemies are rarely satisfied with merely capturing their victims; they act with calculated cruelty to seal their fate permanently. The victim is bound and tied up while still alive inside a deep pit, serving as a dark prison, ensuring there is no way to climb out and escape [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה]. To add further cruelty to this imprisonment, stones are introduced to the ordeal [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While some understand this to mean that the enemies physically threw stones down at the bound victim [צאינה וראינה], the primary approach among commentators is that a massive stone was placed over the opening of the pit, sealing it shut to eliminate any possibility of rescue.

Throughout history, this dark reality was experienced by central figures who were cast into pits, including Joseph, Jeremiah, and Daniel [תורה תמימה]. Most commentators, however, link this specifically to the Babylonian exile and the ordeal of Daniel in the lion's den. Jeremiah foresaw through divine inspiration that Daniel would be thrown into a pit and sealed inside with a heavy stone [רש״י, תורה תמימה, פלגי מים]. Yet, human cruelty is often redirected by divine will. Even though the enemies placed the stone over the opening with evil intentions, God turned their action into a profound positive, using the very stone meant to doom Daniel as a protective shield [לחם דמעה].

This imagery of being bound and stoned also serves as a symbol for the broader historical struggles of the nation. The feeling of being tied down in a pit represents the harsh subjugation under the Greek empire, while the striking stone points to the devastating destruction of the Temple [אלון בכות]. Beyond history, this brutal picture conveys a sharp moral warning. The connection between the act of binding and the casting of stones teaches that a person who speaks evil gossip brings such destruction upon themselves that they deserve the severe punishment of stoning [תורה תמימה].
