פרשת בחוקתי

Leviticus 27:4Sefaria

וְאִם־נְקֵבָ֖ה הִ֑וא וְהָיָ֥ה עֶרְכְּךָ֖ שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָֽׁקֶל׃

When an individual makes a vow to dedicate the monetary value of a woman to God, a specific fixed amount is established. This valuation applies to a person in the prime years of life [ביאור שטיינזלץ, ביאור יש״ר]. The designated amount dictates the actual payment that must be transferred to fulfill the vow [העמק דבר].

In detailing these valuations, the female is treated separately from the male in this specific age bracket, a distinction not found in other age groups. The underlying purpose of this Commandment is to bring merit and success to the person being evaluated. Since these prime years are the time for building a family, the nature of success fundamentally differs between men and women. A man's role centers on fathering children, whereas a woman's purpose is to give birth and raise them. This essential difference requires separate consideration for each gender. In contrast, during earlier or later stages of life, success is measured by general health or physical labor, areas where male and female are viewed equally [העמק דבר].

The fixed value is set at thirty shekels, prompting exploration into why this amount is lower than that of a male. One perspective connects this to the events of creation, suggesting that a woman's value is roughly half of a man's because she was formed from him, making her conceptually a partial creation [חזקוני]. Another approach links the difference to spiritual responsibilities. Because women are obligated in fewer Commandments, their assigned value in this context is correspondingly lower. Furthermore, this sum of thirty shekels exactly matches the penalty required by the Torah when a slave is killed by an ox. This parallel exists because women and slaves share the identical level of obligation regarding Commandments [פירושי רד צ הופמן].
