Leviticus 27:3Sefaria

When an individual vows to dedicate the monetary value of a human life to God, a system of fixed rates is established. Unlike a standard marketplace where a person's worth might be dictated by physical strength or economic utility, this valuation is an absolute standard set by divine decree. Whether an individual is robust and capable or frail and lacking economic value, their designated worth remains constant, determined entirely by age and gender Furthermore, this commitment requires the dedication of a complete person, or at least a vital organ upon which life depends, rather than the value of a single, non-vital body part

The highest valuation is assigned to a man in his prime, spanning from twenty to sixty years of age. These decades represent the peak of human physical and productive power, mirroring the ages of military service and labor in the Tabernacle While it might seem logical to outline these life stages chronologically starting from infancy, the guidelines deliberately open with this adult group. Adult men are typically the ones making these vows and evaluating themselves or others, prompting the focus to begin with them. From there, the standard works backward to children and forward to the elderly This prime category is precisely defined and includes the sixtieth year in its entirety; only after a person has fully completed their sixtieth year do they transition into the subsequent tier of old age

This specific prime rate applies exclusively to a definite male, intentionally excluding individuals of undefined biological sex. However, this exclusion applies only to the fixed valuation system. If someone specifically vows to donate the market value of such individuals, they are assessed and redeemed according to their actual worth The amount set for the prime age—fifty shekels—is the highest valuation found in the Torah. It acts as an absolute ceiling. Even if an extremely wealthy individual wishes to give more, the priest is not permitted to demand or accept anything beyond this maximum [תורה תמימה]. The ideal method of fulfilling this vow is to pay the entire sum at once as a single unit, rather than spreading it out over multiple installments [הכתב והקבלה].

Ultimately, the precise division of human life into distinct periods and monetary amounts serves a profound spiritual purpose. It is a divine decree designed to make a person reflect on the fleeting nature of time. Life in this world is compared to a passing waystation, a temporary marketplace, or a brief summer season. By observing how human value shifts across different stages of life, a person is reminded to harness their years of peak strength for their ultimate spiritual mission before their time slips away
