For a young boy, the required amount is five shekels, which perfectly mirrors the sum given for the redemption of a firstborn son [רד צ הופמן]. Beyond the financial requirement, the age and the amount carry rich symbolism. A person's ultimate purpose is to engage in the study of Torah, and age five marks the traditional milestone when a child begins this lifelong education. Correspondingly, the five shekels represent the Five Books of Moses. The financial transaction itself carries an underlying theme of desire, reflecting a father's deep yearning for the day his son will finally begin his studies [שפתי כהן].

For a young girl, the amount is set at three shekels. A deliberate emphasis on her valuation highlights that a female, even in her earliest years, holds immense and unique importance. Her profound value is rooted in the reality that the continuation of humanity depends on her. The underlying theme of desire applies to her as well, representing the future hopes of other families who will long to welcome her into their own homes when she comes of age [שפתי כהן].

From a mathematical perspective, the amounts assigned to these young children represent exactly one-tenth of their peak adult values. The five shekels for a boy is a tenth of the fifty required for a grown man, and the three shekels for a girl is a tenth of the adult female value of thirty.
