אִם־מִשְּׁנַ֥ת הַיֹּבֵ֖ל יַקְדִּ֣ישׁ שָׂדֵ֑הוּ כְּעֶרְכְּךָ֖ יָקֽוּם׃

When a person dedicates their ancestral land to the upkeep of the Temple and subsequently wishes to redeem it, a fixed financial value is established. This valuation creates a balance between two core ideas: the principle that the entire land belongs to God and therefore returns to its original owners during the Jubilee year, and the individual's ability to contribute the land's value to the Temple [רש״ר הירש].

The timing of this dedication is highly specific. The primary approach among commentators is that the dedication occurs in the period immediately following the conclusion of the Jubilee year. It is considered impossible or improper to dedicate a field during the Jubilee year itself, as the laws of the Jubilee would automatically cancel and void the dedication [רש״י, מזרחי, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, העמק דבר, רד״צ הופמן]. However, another perspective suggests that the dedication can indeed take place during the Jubilee year itself [אבן עזרא].

The type of land being dedicated is also carefully defined. Only ground that is suitable for planting is included in this standard valuation. Areas that cannot be sown, such as high rocky outcrops or deep depressions filled with water, are not measured together with the rest of the field. Instead, their value is calculated separately [תורה תמימה, מלבי״ם, אדרת אליהו].

The focus of the law remains on the act of dedication rather than the redemption process. This is because the owner is expected to act swiftly to redeem the field, preventing others from accidentally misusing sacred property. The assumption is that the redemption happens right away, as the Temple treasurer does not hold onto real estate but rather sells it immediately [הכתב והקבלה, גור אריה].

When the field is redeemed, the value is established at the full amount fixed in the Torah for a standard plot, which is fifty silver shekels. This fixed sum represents the actual payment that will be given [מזרחי, שפתי חכמים]. This maximum payment is required only when both the dedication and the redemption take place immediately during the first year after the Jubilee. In this scenario, the land is available for the maximum possible duration of forty-nine years before the next Jubilee [רש״י, מזרחי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When calculating this time frame, only complete years are counted, while individual months are disregarded [משכיל לדוד, הכתב והקבלה].

The financial value of the redemption is permanently set at the exact time the field is evaluated. This amount remains unchanged even if there is a delay before the actual payment is made [תורה תמימה]. In practical terms, the payment for the full forty-nine years is calculated as forty-nine standard coins, with the addition of forty-nine smaller coins. These smaller coins serve as a standard fee for currency exchange [תורה תמימה, מלבי״ם, אדרת אליהו].
