פרשת פנחס

Numbers 29:19Sefaria

וּשְׂעִיר־עִזִּ֥ים אֶחָ֖ד חַטָּ֑את מִלְּבַד֙ עֹלַ֣ת הַתָּמִ֔יד וּמִנְחָתָ֖הּ וְנִסְכֵּיהֶֽם׃ {ס}

The Festival of Booths features a dynamic and unique system of offerings that changes from day to day. Because of this shifting pattern, each day requires its own detailed instructions, a sharp contrast to other holidays like Passover where the requirements remain the same throughout the entire festival [חזקוני].

At the heart of this changing daily system lies a constant foundation: the daily continual offering, its accompanying grain offering, and its liquid offerings. One perspective explains that multiple liquid offerings are required simply to account for the two continual offerings brought each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon [בכור שור]. A deeper approach suggests that there are two entirely distinct types of liquids being poured. Because the liquids for the main festival animals are already accounted for, these additional offerings must correspond specifically to the continual burnt offering and its grain offering. This means there is one liquid for the burnt offering and a second for the grain offering. The burnt offering is accompanied by wine, which represents human joy and the dedication of our happiest moments to God. In contrast, the grain offering, made of flour and oil to represent nutrition and physical abundance, is accompanied by water. Water serves as the fundamental requirement for all earthly growth and prosperity. Therefore, during this harvest festival, the pouring of water is added alongside the pouring of wine [רש ר הירש].

This combination carries a profound message. It shows that not only does our wine—our moments of spiritual elevation and joy—come from God and belong to Him, but so does our water. Every drop of rain and the most basic elements of physical survival are recognized as His gifts. As the days of the festival progress, they mirror the historical and moral journey of humanity, gradually blurring the divide between a person's spiritual purpose and material needs. Understanding that every single drop of water sustaining life is an act of kindness from God forms the foundation of the festival's overwhelming joy. This deep appreciation historically centered around the drawing of the water, becoming the defining celebration of the holiday [רש ר הירש].
