Ignoring the call of wisdom goes far beyond simple apathy; it is an active and deeply contemptuous rejection of all guidance. The sinners do not merely lack interest; they have absolutely no desire or inclination to listen [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. Their attitude is one of deep disgust and disgrace. They reject the message entirely, viewing the offered guidance as an absolute abomination [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי].

This refusal is a twofold rejection of two distinct educational methods. First, the people reject intellectual and logical guidance. Second, they dismiss clear warnings and the fear of consequence. By doing so, they completely refuse to accept the rules of wisdom from either direction [מלבי״ם].

There are two main ways to understand the exact nature of this rejected guidance. One perspective views it as a turning away from intellectual inquiry. In this view, the people despise the search for wisdom and refuse to reflect on the truths revealed through the natural world [רלב״ג]. Another perspective emphasizes a religious rebellion. This approach explains that the people are directly rejecting the words of God, mocking the warnings and punishments outlined in the Torah for anyone who refuses to listen to His voice [אלשיך].
