Proverbs 1:27Sefaria

Retribution for wrongdoing does not always offer a slow, warning buildup; sometimes, it crashes down with sudden, uncompromising force. It is a multi-dimensional collapse that shatters a person through physical ruin, sheer terror, and deep emotional despair.

The onset of this downfall begins with the very terror that people dread, marking the arrival of the day of disaster itself Commentators offer different perspectives on how this terror manifests. It may strike with absolute suddenness, much like a thick cloud that appears out of nowhere [רש״י], or it might arrive with a deafening noise and overwhelming commotion [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי], leaving complete desolation in its wake [עמנואל הרומי]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that this terror is characterized by darkness and gloom. The fear emerges from a deep obscurity, which magnifies the panic because the individual is entirely unable to see or comprehend the exact nature of the approaching danger

There is no grace period between the initial panic and the actual destruction. The disaster strikes immediately, moving with the terrifying speed and violent force of a raging storm wind This is not merely a distant threat drawing near Rather, it is an absolute and undeniable arrival, with its devastating effects already clearly visible on the ground [מלבי״ם]. The suffering does not build up slowly; the moment the fear sets in, the catastrophe itself hits without a single moment of delay [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

The final stage of this downfall seals the person's fate. This culmination can be understood as an overwhelming flood of troubles that completely darkens a person's world [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי], or as a severe, three-fold strike against those who stubbornly refuse to repent [אלשיך]. Ultimately, this climax reveals a dual dimension of suffering. There is the external disaster that strikes the person's life, paired with a crushing internal anguish that grips the soul. When deep emotional torment combines with outward ruin, the individual is stripped of all hope, left entirely helpless, and plunged into absolute despair
