Proverbs 1:28Sefaria

אָ֣ז יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹ֣א אֶעֱנֶ֑ה יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃

When the inevitable consequences of ignoring a moral life finally arrive, a desperate but useless attempt to fix the past takes place. Wisdom herself speaks directly to those who previously mocked her, making it clear that when the time comes, her doors will be firmly closed to them [עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. This turning point occurs the moment severe trouble and distress strike [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. Another perspective suggests this refers to old age, a period when physical strength fades and the senses weaken. At this late stage, a person might finally recognize the true value of wisdom, but they no longer have the energy or ability to pursue it [אמרי דעת].

In their desperation, these individuals will cry out and call for wisdom [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, this cry is deeply flawed. Because it does not come from a place of genuine sincerity in the heart, God treats these individuals as distant and refuses to answer them [אלשיך]. Wisdom's silence serves as their fitting punishment, standing in complete contrast to how God readily answers the righteous when they call out to Him [עמנואל הרומי]. Driven by panic, they will actively ask, search, and demand wisdom [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], with some commentators noting that they will even wake up early in the morning to look for it [עמנואל הרומי].

Commentators offer different ways to understand the relationship between this initial cry for help and the subsequent search. One view suggests that the two actions are simply a repetition of the same idea, a common poetic style used in proverbs to strengthen the message and beautify the language [אמרי דעת]. Conversely, another approach identifies a tragic process of spiritual decline. Initially, wisdom is still nearby; they can call out to her, even if she refuses to respond. Over time, however, she moves completely out of reach, ensuring that even an active, desperate search will fail. This mirrors the tragic downfall of a person who begins by knowing the right path but ignoring it to chase personal desires, ultimately sinking into a state where they are totally disconnected from all knowledge and understanding [מלבי״ם]. In the end, this complete inability to find wisdom leaves them with nothing but total loss and absolute shame [אלשיך].
