Proverbs 1:15Sefaria

בְּנִ֗י אַל־תֵּלֵ֣ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם מְנַ֥ע רַ֝גְלְךָ֗ מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃

A father offers a firm warning to his child about the deep dangers of negative social influence and the temptation to join corrupt individuals. The instruction goes far beyond simply avoiding criminal acts; it demands a complete separation from any environment or route that might lead toward wrongdoers. The primary approach among commentators is that this separation is necessary to prevent a person from learning from the actions of sinners and adopting their lifestyle. Beyond the practical risks, there is a profound spiritual danger. Associating with wrongdoers ultimately means absorbing their corrupt beliefs and perspectives. When these individuals try to pull someone into their way of thinking, it is considered equivalent to spilling blood, as it leads to the loss of the soul [אמרי דעת].

The warning unfolds in a gradual, escalating manner, distinguishing between different types of roads. First, a person is cautioned against joining a group of corrupt people on a main, public highway. One must not keep their company even casually [ראשון לציון, מלבי״ם]. Even if this wide road appears comfortable and completely innocent at first, it ultimately leads to a narrow and bitter end [אלשיך].

Following this, the instruction becomes even stricter, demanding that a person hold back entirely from the private, narrow trails used by these individuals. It is not enough to avoid walking together with a group; one must also stay away from the isolated paths taken by a single wrongdoer [מלבי״ם]. In fact, one should avoid stepping onto these specific trails even when the sinners are not physically present. This total avoidance prevents any possibility of being harmed by them or being subtly drawn into their ways [ראשון לציון, רלב״ג].

This absolute distance is necessary because wrongdoers are so accustomed to their behavior that they view their sins as completely acceptable. They can easily invent moral justifications for their crimes. Anyone who is tempted to join them puts their own life in real danger. These individuals stop at nothing, and eventually, their cruelty will turn inward, leading them to shed the blood of their own partners [ראשון לציון, מלבי״ם].
