משלי, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ד

Proverbs 1:14Sefaria

גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ תַּפִּ֣יל בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ כִּ֥יס אֶ֝חָ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃

Criminals often lure the young and impressionable into their ranks by promising wealth, belonging, and a completely equal share of the profits. To make the illicit lifestyle seem as attractive as possible, the gang offers a vision of perfect financial partnership.

The primary approach among commentators is that the gang presents the youth with a choice between two appealing financial setups. He can either participate in a lottery where the stolen goods are divided, allowing everyone to take a personal share home, or the group can pool all their resources into a single shared fund, living together and enjoying the spoils as a collective [רש״י, עמנואל הרומי, מצודת דוד]. This communal arrangement is generally understood as keeping the stolen wealth in a single physical sack or wallet [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective views this shared structure as a strict accounting system, guaranteeing an equal and uniform allowance for every single member of the group [עמנואל הרומי].

Alternatively, rather than offering a choice, the gang might be proposing a comprehensive system that divides the loot based on its specific type. Physical items and goods are distributed through a lottery for personal ownership, while all cash is deposited into a communal treasury for the gang to use together [מלבי״ם].

To make the invitation even more tempting, the criminals offer the youth special privileges and elevated status. They might offer him the honor of being the one who actually casts the lottery, giving him the power to determine the shares for the entire group [מצודת דוד]. An even more extreme interpretation suggests they offer him a double benefit: he can keep his own private share won in the lottery entirely for himself, while still being fully supported by the gang's communal fund [אלשיך].

Despite these enticing promises of equality and brotherhood, this path carries a severe moral danger. A lifestyle built on chasing physical desires, eating, and drinking will inevitably drain the group's stolen funds. This constant financial shortage will force the gang to steal repeatedly. Ultimately, when confronted by the rightful owners of the property, this desperate cycle of theft will escalate and drag the group down to the point of committing murder [רלב״ג].
