משלי, פרק א׳, פסוק ל״א

Proverbs 1:31Sefaria

וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑ם וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃

A core spiritual law governs human behavior: the law of cause and effect. Just as a farmer plants a tree and eventually eats its harvest, people inevitably reap the direct results of their actions. Those who willingly choose a corrupt path must ultimately face the full consequences of their decisions.

The payback for these choices happens on two distinct levels. The first involves the actual deeds and the physical steps taken down a bad path. The second addresses the inner world: the thoughts, the evil plans, and the core decision to reject wisdom. The resulting punishment is intense and overwhelming. Because the wrongdoing was carefully planned beforehand, the severity of the sin increases, bringing a correspondingly heavy punishment [מלבי״ם].

While these consequences are felt deeply, the troubles a person experiences in this world are merely the surface results, the fruits of their actions. The primary penalty for their choices remains stored away to be faced in hell [רש״י].

However, there is another way to view this painful harvest, seeing it not just as a punishment, but as a path to awakening. The suffering people endure is actually made up of the negative forces they created through their own actions. As they begin to experience these consequences, they realize that God has distanced Himself from them. In this light, being overwhelmed by the results of their plans is not merely a painful payback. Instead, it creates a profound sense of disgust and nausea toward their own behavior. Sickened by the reality of their bad choices, they are driven to abandon their destructive path and return to God [אלשיך].
