Proverbs 1:4Sefaria

Wisdom is not reserved exclusively for the highly educated or the elite. Instead, the teachings of Proverbs specifically reach out to those at the beginning of their life's journey, individuals who lack experience and critical thinking. The overarching purpose is to equip them with practical and mental tools to navigate life wisely, recognize reality, and avoid hidden traps.

The teachings first address naive individuals who tend to believe anything and are easily drawn after their physical desires However, some suggest that these are simply people who have not yet learned wisdom but possess a natural talent and readiness to absorb it [אמרי דעת]. The objective is to grant these individuals shrewdness, defined as practical wisdom, sharpness, and cleverness This practical wisdom strips away their naivete, teaching them how to properly conduct themselves in the world [אבן עזרא]. By doing so, they learn to examine matters with their intellect rather than being led astray [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, this cleverness serves as a strategic tool, allowing a person to outsmart their negative impulses rather than being dragged down by them [אלשיך].

The second group addressed is the youth. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to a young person who has not yet gained life experience and often acts recklessly, without prior thought or concern for future consequences Conversely, others explain that this refers to a person who is completely empty of any prior learning To fill this void, the youth is provided with two essential tools: knowledge and discretion. Knowledge represents clear understanding and basic truths acquired through the senses and personal experience [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Discretion is described as thoughtful planning, sophistication, and deep conceptual thinking that must take place before taking action

The combination of these two tools gives the youth the ability to think carefully before acting. It allows them to weigh the long-term consequences of their actions, ensuring that the recklessness of their youth will not bring shame to their old age, and it lays a solid foundation for thoughtful reasoning
