Proverbs 13:14Sefaria

תּוֹרַ֣ת חָ֭כָם מְק֣וֹר חַיִּ֑ים לָ֝ס֗וּר מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי מָֽוֶת׃

True wisdom offers more than just good advice; it acts as a constant, life-giving force that shields a person from ruin. The guidance provided by a wise person is not merely a collection of theoretical ideas. Instead, it is an organized, systematic study of wisdom and reverence that is passed on to others [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי]. This teaching functions like a spring of flowing water [מצודת דוד]. It sustains the individual by granting physical life in the present world, as well as eternal spiritual life in the world to come [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי]. The ultimate purpose of this learning is to help a person navigate safely and avoid deadly traps.

The primary approach among commentators is that Torah and wisdom provide practical directions, teaching a person how to avoid falling into harmful situations. These traps take several forms. They can be understood as actual sins and wrongdoings [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. At a deeper level, they represent inner desires and negative character traits that ultimately lead to spiritual ruin [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, these dangers encompass physical threats and punishments, both in this life and after death [עמנואל הרומי]. By dedicating time to study, a person naturally moves away from foolishness and achieves a deep closeness to God [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

Beyond offering practical advice on how to avoid bad choices, this wisdom also provides active protection. Someone immersed in Torah study might worry that focusing so intensely on learning will leave them vulnerable to everyday worldly troubles. However, this study operates exactly like a rushing spring. Just as a strong current of water naturally sweeps away stones and debris in its path, the Torah is an abundant source flowing from above. It actively pushes away deadly traps and clears the path for those who engage with it, removing dangers before the individual even has to face them [אלשיך].
