Proverbs 13:16Sefaria

כׇּל־עָ֭רוּם יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה בְדָ֑עַת וּ֝כְסִ֗יל יִפְרֹ֥שׂ אִוֶּֽלֶת׃

The line between success and failure often lies not just in good intentions, but in how a person manages their actions and presents them to the world. Expanding on the recurring theme of concealing wisdom versus broadcasting foolishness [אמרי דעת, מלבי״ם], the contrast between two types of people is stark. A sensible person, possessing deep inner wisdom [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ], moves through life with careful calculation. Every step is taken with specific intent and clear knowledge aimed at achieving a desired outcome [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. Rather than stumbling in doubt or darkness, this individual maps out the path thoroughly [מלבי״ם]. Even if bystanders do not immediately grasp the purpose behind these actions, the wise person operates with a clear objective [מצודת דוד] and never wastes words [עמנואל הרומי]. Sometimes, this sharp intelligence is even used specifically to teach others [אבן עזרא]. King David illustrates this focused approach; when he needed an attendant, he sought out a specific young woman rather than acting aimlessly [רש״י]. Interestingly, this calculated restraint applies even to someone acting deceitfully. A shrewd liar will know exactly when to stop talking and remain silent the moment suspicion arises, well before the falsehood is fully exposed [אלשיך].

Conversely, a foolish person operates without any such restraint, completely exposing their flaws to the public. Instead of calculating their steps, they lay out and broadcast their stupidity for everyone to see [אבן עזרא, עמנואל הרומי, מצודת דוד]. Foolishness surrounds them entirely [ביאור שטיינזלץ], leading to mistakes at every turn and ultimately preventing them from reaching their goals [רלב״ג]. Looking at the deeper motives, the fool abandons wisdom to chase personal desires. To justify these poor choices, they rely on doubts, spreading them out like a wide garment and effectively choosing to walk in complete darkness [מלבי״ם]. This utter lack of focus is seen in King Ahasuerus, who foolishly ordered all young women to be gathered for him. Because his demand was so scattered and unrealistic, people simply hid their daughters [רש״י]. When it comes to deceit, the fool's lack of control is especially destructive. Unlike the shrewd person who knows when to pause, a foolish liar just keeps talking, piling lie upon lie to cover their tracks. They continuously expand their foolishness until they are eventually trapped in their own net [אלשיך].
