Proverbs 13:6Sefaria

צְ֭דָקָה תִּצֹּ֣ר תׇּם־דָּ֑רֶךְ וְ֝רִשְׁעָ֗ה תְּסַלֵּ֥ף חַטָּֽאת׃

The moral trajectory of human life is entirely shaped by personal actions and character traits. Goodness serves as a protective shield, while evil acts as a destructive force that distorts and derails the journey of anyone who embraces it. Justice, honesty, and moral wholeness [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי] naturally guard a person whose life is straight and free from flaws [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that this upright behavior protects an individual from both physical and spiritual harm, helping them remain firmly on the right path. Some view this protective force specifically as the fulfillment of commandments between humans and God [מלבי״ם], or as the physical act of giving charity [מצודת דוד]. When given purely and without pride, the act of charity itself becomes an advocate for the giver, actively shielding them from harm [מצודת דוד]. However, natural innocence and basic human morality are not always enough to prevent a person from stumbling. It is specifically the fulfillment of God's commands that truly protects an innocent person from making critical mistakes [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, wickedness—defined as a degradation of character and a distancing from God—operates in the exact opposite manner [עמנואל הרומי, מלבי״ם]. Instead of protecting, it ruins, distorts, and trips up the sinner [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that a sinner's evil actions can become so absolute that the individual is practically synonymous with the sin itself [רש״י, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this dynamic highlights a deep internal flaw and an overwhelming pull toward physical desires [מלבי״ם]. Wickedness leads a person down a crooked, self-defeating path [מצודת דוד]. It prevents them from achieving their schemes because God ultimately frustrates their plans [רלב״ג]. This creates a severe downward spiral where one offense inevitably drags the person into another [עמנואל הרומי]. Ultimately, this deep-seated wickedness takes minor mistakes and turns them into severe crimes, guaranteeing the individual's eventual downfall [אלשיך].
