אֲשֶׁ֣ר אׇרְחֹתֵיהֶ֣ם עִקְּשִׁ֑ים וּ֝נְלוֹזִ֗ים בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתָֽם׃

Abandoning a life of integrity is rarely an isolated mistake; it quickly devolves into an entire lifestyle of moral and intellectual distortion. Those who choose wrongdoing adopt a twisted trajectory, where every step distances them further from the truth and their proper destination. The primary approach among commentators is that such individuals are defined by a deep-seated crookedness and a total deviation from the straight path [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This distortion affects their entire being. Their opinions become warped, their character traits twist, and their methods of learning lose all honesty [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. The corruption permeates every layer of their existence, making them just as stubbornly deceitful in their general habits as they are in their specific routines [עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond a general understanding of this crookedness, there is a subtle distinction in the types of routes these individuals travel. One perspective views this difference through the width of the road. In this view, one route represents a broad, comfortable path, while the other is a narrow, tight trail. If a person trains himself to act deceitfully on the wide, safe roads of life—where it is normally difficult to stumble—he is bound to become hopelessly entangled and fail entirely when forced to navigate life's narrow, complex challenges [אלשיך].

A different approach focuses on the direction and ultimate purpose of the journey. Here, the first path is understood as the direct, straightforward route to a goal, while the second represents a circular detour. An honest person might occasionally need to take a detour to avoid danger or navigate around wicked people, always with the intention of returning to the main road. For sinners, however, the spiritual damage is twofold. Their direct routes are fundamentally crooked to begin with, and when they take a detour, they lose sight of the goal completely. Instead of using the alternate route to eventually find their way back, they wander off into chaos, never returning to the proper track [מלבי״ם].
