The world operates on a foundation of justice and Divine providence, making the presence of evil entirely temporary. While those who pursue goodness find lasting stability, those who choose a path of sin face ultimate ruin, both in the present reality and in the eternal life to come.
Commentators distinguish between different types of sinners. The wicked are those who persistently engage in harmful actions, whether their offenses are directed toward God or their fellow human beings [מלבי״ם]. A second group, defined by their betrayal, is understood in several ways. Some view them as people who specifically wrong others [מלבי״ם], while others view them as individuals guilty of sexual immorality, committing a profound betrayal against both a spouse and God [אלשיך]. Alternatively, rather than representing a distinct group, this betrayal might simply describe the tragic state of the wicked, who are suddenly removed from the world while still deeply involved in their deceit, long before they have a chance to repent [עמנואל הרומי].
The consequence for these actions is a complete and absolute uprooting from their place [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This occurs because God removes His providence from them after they fail to seek out true wisdom [רלב״ג]. There is some discussion regarding the exact severity of this fate. One perspective suggests a distinction where the wicked are cut off permanently, while those guilty of betrayal are only uprooted temporarily [מלבי״ם]. However, others view the punishment as absolute for all involved, resulting in premature death, barrenness, and a total loss of future legacy in this world [אלשיך], as well as a complete severing from the World to Come [עמנואל הרומי].
On a deeper level, this dynamic of sin and consequence reflects humanity's internal struggle. Those who fall away are often trapped by false beliefs, or they surrender to their basic animal instincts and material desires. By doing so, they abandon their intellect and break their covenant with God. Chasing after fleeting worldly possessions ultimately disconnects a person from eternal life and leads to their downfall [עמנואל הרומי]. Only Divine wisdom and instruction serve as the tools to save a person from this fate. They provide the ultimate assurance that even if those who do wrong appear successful in the present, their time is limited, leaving the upright to dwell in true security [אלשיך].
