Proverbs 26:25Sefaria

A person who masks deep-seated hatred behind a veil of friendship and smooth talk poses a severe danger. Extreme caution is required when dealing with someone who harbors such hidden malice.

When an enemy speaks with a flattering tone [רלב״ג], or when their pleas sound passionate and entirely sincere [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד], they must not be trusted. This individual works hard to conceal their grudge and project the image of a loving friend, yet their outward speech is completely disconnected from their inner truth. Once their true hatred is recognized, one must never be tempted by their words or place any trust in them, as they are actively plotting deceit to cause harm [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי].

The reason for this severe warning is the vast amount of evil stored within the enemy's mind. They harbor an abundance of abominations; the idea of possessing seven such traits is not a literal count, but rather an expression of a massive quantity [מצודת ציון]. Their heart is filled with repulsive thoughts and endless deceit [ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. These hidden plans are actions that God hates, which the enemy keeps buried inside with the intention of carrying them out later. They are forced to hide these wicked intentions out of fear of the disaster that would strike them if their true nature were exposed. Ultimately, however, God will ensure that their wickedness is revealed to the public. The very damage they planned will turn back and strike them, much like a person who digs a pit only to fall into it themselves [אבן עזרא].

Beyond human relationships, this concept carries a profound symbolic meaning regarding one's relationship with God [מלבי״ם]. The warning also applies to a person who offers endless prayers and pleas to Heaven. The outward display of a begging, passionate voice cannot be trusted if, deep down, the person's heart remains filled with corrupt and unacceptable traits.
