Proverbs 26:26Sefaria

תִּכַּסֶּ֣ה שִׂ֭נְאָה בְּמַשָּׁא֑וֹן תִּגָּלֶ֖ה רָעָת֣וֹ בְקָהָֽל׃

Evil that is carefully hidden away has a natural tendency to eventually be exposed to the light of day. A person might weave schemes and conceal his malicious intentions from others, believing he can harm his victims without facing any consequences. The primary approach among commentators is that this describes a wicked individual who masks his hatred and harmful actions in absolute darkness [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם] or in desolate, empty places where there are no witnesses [רלב״ג, עמנואל הרומי, שטיינזלץ]. By pretending to be a loyal friend, he ensures his victim drops all defenses, allowing him to quietly lay a trap meant to bring about complete destruction. This concealment happens almost on its own, driven by the intense desire to keep these dark plots entirely out of sight [מנחת שי, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ].

Despite these careful attempts at secrecy, the hidden truth is guaranteed to be revealed to the public. God actively orchestrates events behind the scenes so that whatever was done in secret, or whatever the wicked person planned to do, is ultimately exposed before a large crowd. The purpose of this public unmasking is to ensure that everyone recognizes the person's true wicked nature, leading to his rightful punishment [רש״י, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי]. Even without direct Divine intervention, the natural flow of events will eventually cause the wicked person to slip up and harm himself, bringing his true intentions to the surface. Therefore, a person should never blindly trust someone who merely puts on an act of goodness [שטיינזלץ].

In sharp contrast to this view, an alternative approach offers practical wisdom directed at the potential victim rather than describing the wicked. In this context, the hidden danger occurs during ordinary business dealings. When a person realizes that a fraudster is trying to cheat or harm him, he is advised to hide his awareness and his anger while they continue their transactions. By playing along, he makes the corrupt individual believe the plot is working perfectly. During this time, the victim must patiently investigate and gather solid evidence. Ultimately, this allows him to expose the fraudster's actions publicly and undeniably, fulfilling a duty to make the community aware of such deceitful people [אלשיך].
