Nature operates on a precise rhythm that brings blessing to the world. But when natural forces appear out of season, those exact same elements become destructive. In the same way, granting social status and honor to a foolish person is not just pointless; it actively disrupts the proper moral and social order.
The natural world illustrates this concept clearly. Rain and snow are fundamentally positive forces that water the earth and help crops grow. However, if they arrive during the hot summer season, a time typically used for spreading figs out in the sun to dry, or during the grain harvest, their presence is completely unnatural and deeply damaging [רש"י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead of helping, the unseasonal rain rots the grain that has already ripened, and the snow ruins the figs meant to dry in the heat.
Giving honor to someone who lacks wisdom works the exact same way. When honor is given to a wise person, it is like rain falling on a planted field, encouraging their potential to grow and bringing their wisdom to life. A fool, on the other hand, has never planted seeds of wisdom in his mind [מלבי"ם]. Therefore, offering him respect does not help him; it only corrupts and destroys.
This misplaced respect causes two distinct types of damage. Publicly, it harms society. When everyday people see a fool being honored, they might mistakenly conclude that there is no real advantage to being wise rather than foolish [רלב"ג, מצודת דוד]. Privately, the honor harms the fool himself. One might think that showing respect could improve the character of someone lacking wisdom, or someone who has learned but was corrupted by bad choices. In reality, the honor only feeds his ego. Whether it is a steady stream of respect, compared to piling snow, or passing praise, compared to a sudden rainstorm, the result is the same. The fool swells with pride and loses himself, just as the grain and figs swell and rot from the unseasonal weather [אלשיך].
Furthermore, just as snow falling in the summer melts rapidly and leaves no trace, honor given to a fool without a solid foundation of wisdom is strictly temporary and will not last [אמרי דעת]. Ultimately, a foolish person is entirely unsuited for any type of honor, whether physical or spiritual, because it simply does not fit his character and is entirely out of place [עמנואל הרומי].
