Proverbs 26:14Sefaria

Constant motion does not always mean actual progress. King Solomon draws an ironic and precise parallel between an inanimate object and a living person, showing how a lack of effort makes an individual a prisoner in their own space. The primary approach among commentators is to compare a lazy person to a door turning on its fixed pivot. A door swings back and forth, opening and closing, yet it never actually leaves its spot. In the exact same way, a lazy person tosses and turns from side to side in bed, unable to rise and seek a livelihood This constant movement in bed is not a sign of peaceful rest, but rather an internal struggle. The person actually wants to get up and work, but lacks the willpower to detach from the mattress. As a result, he simply shifts back and forth without ever getting up [עמנואל הרומי].

A different perspective views the swinging door as a sharp contrast to the lazy person. The door moves because the active members of the household have already gotten up to do their work. They open and close the doors as they go out and return, while the lazy person remains sprawled in bed doing absolutely nothing

Beyond the physical avoidance of work, this behavior carries a deep spiritual cost. Physical laziness inevitably leads to spiritual decline. A lazy person delays serving God, neglects studying the Torah, and misses the proper times for the Shema prayer and public prayer without even realizing it On an allegorical level, while wise individuals actively open and close books of wisdom to elevate themselves spiritually, the lazy person remains sunk in the physical world, making no effort to grow or advance [עמנואל הרומי].
