תהלים, פרק ק״ג, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 103:22Sefaria

בָּרְכ֤וּ יְהֹוָ֨ה ׀ כׇּֽל־מַעֲשָׂ֗יו בְּכׇל־מְקֹמ֥וֹת מֶמְשַׁלְתּ֑וֹ בָּרְכִ֥י נַ֝פְשִׁ֗י אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

A grand celebration of praise expands outward to encompass the entire universe before ultimately returning to the most intimate space of all, the individual human soul. An invitation is extended to all of creation to join in honoring the Creator, setting the stage for humanity's ultimate and most meaningful responsibility.

The call to praise is directed toward the lower, material world of nature. This includes the basic elements of the earth and everything formed from them, such as animals, plants, and inanimate objects like dirt, stones, and metals [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. Every creature across the entirety of existence is summoned [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God's dominion spans every corner of the universe [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], covering all geographical spaces, from the seas and dry land to populated areas, deserts, mountains, and hills [מאירי]. His presence and active providence reach deep into this physical realm, guiding it both through the fixed laws of nature and the heavenly bodies, and through miraculous interventions carried out by angels [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Naturally, these lower creations lack the intellect to consciously offer praise. However, praise is attributed to them simply because they exist under God's absolute rule and provide the necessary foundation for human life [רד״ק, מאירי].

After sweeping across the vastness of creation, the focus narrows back to the individual soul, perfectly closing the circle that began this song of praise [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This return is not merely a stylistic choice but a profound statement about humanity's unique place in the universe. While the lower worlds operate without conscious awareness, the human soul stands supreme, using its intellect to rule over the physical realm [רד״ק]. Furthermore, a human being is a miniature universe, gathering together every layer of reality. While the physical body is bound to the strict laws of the lower material world, the soul originates from the spiritual and angelic realms. It possesses the unique power to overcome physical instincts and obey God [מלבי״ם, מאירי]. Because human beings are so complex, containing within themselves everything from the highest spiritual heights to the lowest physical depths, the human soul is uniquely tasked with blessing God on behalf of all creation [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Ultimately, the continued existence of all worlds, and the very praises they offer, depend entirely on the human soul blessing God, as the entire universe was created and is sustained purely through the spiritual service of humanity [אלשיך].
