Psalms 103:3Sefaria

הַסֹּלֵ֥חַ לְכׇל־עֲוֺנֵ֑כִי הָ֝רֹפֵ֗א לְכׇל־תַּחֲלוּאָֽיְכִי׃

The deep connection between a person's spiritual state and their overall well-being stands at the center of divine providence. The process of human purification is incomplete without God's intervention, which simultaneously grants forgiveness to the soul and relief from pain.

There is a direct and necessary link between forgiveness and healing. The pardon of sins must precede recovery; a person does not rise from a bed of illness until God has forgiven their wrongdoings [תורה תמימה]. This process of sickness and suffering serves as an educational tool from God. It is meant to discipline the wrongdoer, awaken a desire to repent, and ultimately save the person from death [אבן עזרא].

When considering the exact nature of these illnesses, two primary approaches emerge. One perspective suggests that this healing applies to both physical and spiritual ailments [ביאור שטיינזלץ, המאירי]. Expanding on this dual nature, [אלשיך] explains that while sins belong to the soul, the body is the part that bears physical suffering in order to cleanse and purge those very sins. God then acts on both levels at once, forgiving the soul while healing the body. Conversely, another view understands the healing on a purely spiritual level. Just like the body, the soul experiences states of health and sickness, and the spiritual illnesses are the sins themselves [מלבי״ם]. Therefore, the healing of diseases is simply the act of forgiving sins and restoring the damaged soul [רד״ק, המאירי].

The completeness of this divine pardon is vast, though commentators view its scope differently. One approach maintains that God's great kindness lies in not punishing a person for their entire history of wrongdoing, holding them accountable for only a small fraction of their misdeeds [רד״ק]. On the other hand, when a person repents out of pure love, the forgiveness becomes absolute, covering every detail of their past. God's mercy is so profound in this state that the sins themselves are transformed into merits, planted by Him to bear positive fruit. Emerging from this deep and total forgiveness, a person is granted a complete healing that washes away even the most minor and constant pains [חומת אנך].
