Psalms 103:15Sefaria

אֱ֭נוֹשׁ כֶּחָצִ֣יר יָמָ֑יו כְּצִ֥יץ הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה כֵּ֣ן יָצִֽיץ׃

Human life on earth is defined by its fragility and rapid passing, a reality that naturally awakens God's mercy for His creations. The primary approach among commentators is that comparing a person to grass powerfully illustrates this brevity. Just as grass dries up and withers under the hot sun much faster than other vegetation, human life fades away with striking speed [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

This shortness of life carries a heavy spiritual cost. The brief span granted to a person does not leave enough time to achieve true spiritual perfection [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, if someone makes mistakes in their youth and hopes to correct their path in old age, they may suddenly discover that their time has run out before they can make amends [רד״ק].

Life is also likened to a field flower, a comparison that captures the periods of childhood, youthful blooming, and worldly success. Yet, just like the grass, these periods vanish in very little time [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Much like a delicate flower that dries out the moment a harsh wind blows over it, a person is here one moment, and in the next, they are gone [רד״ק].

The image of the flower adds deeper layers to the understanding of human insignificance. Even at the absolute peak of its bloom, a flower lacks true, lasting substance. This serves as a reminder that so many of a person's daily affairs and earthly achievements are ultimately empty and without lasting purpose [מלבי״ם]. At the same time, the very way a flower grows offers a profound lesson in humility. A wildflower only begins to sprout after its seed completely rots and decays in the earth. Similarly, human beings are formed from humble, lowly beginnings. This stark reality is meant to remind a person of their own smallness, especially when facing the overwhelming power of their negative desires [אלשיך].
