Unlike ordinary servants who maintain fixed routines, angels are special messengers. They possess immense strength, capable of altering the natural order, and no creation can stand against them [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. However, the Sages extend this concept of mighty strength to humanity as well. A person who successfully conquers their inner urges and resists an available opportunity to sin is aided by miraculous providence, earning the right to be called a mighty warrior alongside these celestial beings [תורה תמימה].
The very essence of angels is total obedience. Their entire purpose is to carry out God's will, and they take action only when they receive a direct command from their Creator [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. The primary approach among commentators highlights the absolute purity of their motivation. Unlike humans, who often act in anticipation of an external reward, angels require no such incentive. The simple privilege of hearing God's voice and fulfilling His desire is their ultimate reward, pleasure, and purpose [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Their passion for fulfilling a divine command is so profound that while engaged in one task, they eagerly listen for the next [אלשיך]. Through this constant devotion, they strive to understand God's glory, even if fully grasping His true essence remains beyond their reach [מאירי].
The nature of these celestial messengers is defined by their readiness to act before even hearing the details of their mission. This angelic secret of prioritizing action over understanding was famously adopted by the Israelites at Mount Sinai when they declared their commitment to do before they hear [תורה תמימה]. Yet, despite the immense spiritual height of the angels, human beings retain a unique advantage. Angels execute their duties using an inherent power completely devoid of free will, whereas humanity serves God through the profound power of independent choice [אלשיך].
