Psalms 103:8Sefaria

God interacts with the world through profound compassion, reflecting the famous attributes of mercy He once revealed to Moses in the cleft of the rock [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. King David specifically highlights certain aspects of this divine goodness [מצודת דוד]. Rather than detailing all of God's traits, David focuses only on the specific forms of mercy he personally needed to survive his own illnesses and hardships, much like Moses chose to mention specific attributes during his own prayers

Commentators view these expressions of mercy through two distinct lenses: God's care for the individual in distress, and His broader protection over the Israelites as a nation. On a personal level, divine compassion acts as a preventive shield. God actively guards His followers, stopping harm before it can even reach them On a national scale, this same compassion sustains the Israelites throughout their exile. God protects them from total destruction and even influences their captors to treat them with kindness [רד״ק].

When hardship does strike, God's grace is seen in His immediate response to those who cry out to Him for rescue This grace is also woven into everyday life, as God constantly provides people with their daily livelihood and basic needs [רד״ק]. Furthermore, there is a shared understanding that God exercises immense patience. Instead of punishing people the moment they sin, He holds back His anger, granting them the time and space needed to correct their ways and return to Him Finally, God possesses an endless supply of goodness that never runs out [אבן עזרא, מאירי], pouring this abundant kindness over His creations fresh every single day [רד״ק]. Ultimately, all of these traits shape how God guides Israel, standing as a clear testament to His righteousness [מאירי].
