תהלים, פרק קמ״ה, פסוק ט״ז

Psalms 145:16Sefaria

פּוֹתֵ֥חַ אֶת־יָדֶ֑ךָ וּמַשְׂבִּ֖יעַ לְכׇל־חַ֣י רָצֽוֹן׃

The absolute dependence of all creation on Divine providence forms the very foundation of the world's existence. God holds the key to sustenance, and the abundance He provides is the source of life itself. Recognizing this constant, life-giving flow is of paramount importance. In fact, acknowledging this truth is the primary reason why reciting this psalm of praise grants a person a place in the World to Come. Furthermore, during historical times of crisis, prayers for sustenance actually took precedence over prayers to stop plagues. The underlying belief was that when God provides food and satisfaction, He naturally also grants the life needed to enjoy those blessings [תורה תמימה].

The flow of this abundance is driven directly by the Divine Will. Rather than a mechanical process, it is God's own will that acts as the force opening His hands to bestow goodness, particularly during moments of grace when the gates of blessing are fully opened [מלבי״ם]. When it comes to how God satisfies His creatures, the primary approach among commentators is that He caters directly to the unique needs and cravings of every individual being. Instead of dispensing a generic supply of nourishment, God provides each creature with exactly what suits its specific nature and appetite, perfectly matching the type of food to the animal, whether it grazes on grass or hunts for meat [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, המאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that the satisfaction comes from the Divine abundance itself. In this view, God fills His creations with His inherent goodness, kindness, and blessing, or He provides them with the very drive and will to live [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alongside this physical understanding of sustenance, there is a profound spiritual dimension. From this viewpoint, the concept of a living being specifically points to the righteous person, who is considered truly alive. Consequently, the idea of being satisfied does not refer to material wealth, as physical possessions can never bring true fulfillment. Real satisfaction is purely spiritual. God fulfills the deepest, most profound desire of the righteous, which is the yearning to connect and cling intimately to their Creator [אלשיך].
