תהלים, פרק כ״א, פסוק י״ב

Psalms 21:12Sefaria

כִּי־נָט֣וּ עָלֶ֣יךָ רָעָ֑ה חָֽשְׁב֥וּ מְ֝זִמָּ֗ה בַּל־יוּכָֽלוּ׃

The severe downfall and punishment of the enemies stem from more than just their harm to the nation; they are rooted in their malicious intent and audacity to direct their hatred toward God. These adversaries actively organized to do evil [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד], even joining forces with other foes to achieve their goals [מאירי]. Crucially, their hostility was aimed directly at God Himself. Rebelling against King David is viewed as a direct rebellion against God and His anointed leader [מצודת דוד, מאירי]. This ultimate defiance toward the heavens is sometimes linked to specific historical figures, such as the wicked Titus, who arrogantly boasted that he had struck God directly [רש״י]. The extreme severity of their punishment is a result of their acting as though they actually possessed the power to damage God's honor and exert control over Him [אלשיך].

A deep tension exists between human plotting and actual reality. The enemies devised a scheme with the practical goal of removing David from his throne [מאירי]. However, this planning largely remained confined to mere thought and potential [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that these adversaries completely failed to bring their plans into reality. Even so, they face severe punishment simply for formulating the plot and possessing the desire to cause harm if they had the power to do so. In contrast to this view, another perspective suggests that their scheme was so exceptionally arrogant that the enemies initially believed they could not even conceive of it, yet they ultimately carried it out in practice [אלשיך].
