Psalms 34:17Sefaria

God's involvement in the world extends far beyond protecting and blessing the righteous. His providence actively counters the wicked, ensuring that the world does not descend into lawless chaos The primary approach among commentators is that God directs a gaze of intense anger and wrath toward those who commit evil. Just as human rage is clearly visible on a person's features, God's angry presence is turned toward the wicked Similar to other biblical accounts where God sets His gaze upon people to punish them, His wrath is pointed directly at evildoers

In contrast to viewing this directed gaze purely as anger, another perspective notes that the specific name of God present here actually represents His attribute of mercy. For the righteous, strict justice is often transformed into mercy. For the wicked, however, the exact opposite occurs: even the attribute of mercy is turned against them. God may grant them temporary success or goodness in this world, but this is only a means to fully exact their eventual punishment and completely erase their memory from the earth [אלשיך].

Ultimately, this destructive providence serves a dual purpose. It not only punishes the wicked and obliterates their legacy, but it also actively rescues the righteous by stripping evildoers of their ability to cause further harm [מלבי״ם].
