Living a life of integrity does not guarantee a carefree existence. In fact, a path of righteousness is often paved with complex struggles, deep fears, distress, and heartbreak. Yet, this challenging journey is ultimately guided by divine providence and the promise of redemption.

Commentators offer different perspectives on why a good person faces such profound difficulties. One approach suggests that God tests individuals for their own benefit, carefully examining their actions. This serves to reveal their true righteousness to the world, showing how they remain steadfast in the truth even during times of severe hardship [רד״ק, מאירי]. Another perspective views these hardships not as punishments for past mistakes, but as afflictions of love meant to elevate the person [אלשיך]. Alternatively, these numerous troubles can be understood as purely external wounds. Much like surface blemishes on the skin, they may appear overwhelming and widespread, but they never threaten the inner essence or soul of the righteous individual. This stands in sharp contrast to the wicked, for whom a single misfortune can destroy the very root of their existence [מלבי״ם].

Despite the presence of suffering, the ultimate message is one of enduring hope. The primary approach among commentators is that witnessing a good person endure pain should never lead to despair. God constantly watches over him and will eventually deliver him from every hardship, ensuring that he does not permanently fail or succumb to any of them. This deliverance is profoundly personal; it is not carried out by an angel or a messenger, but by God Himself. He intervenes directly because the individual maintained his integrity and remained humble throughout his suffering [אלשיך]. Through this divine support, the righteous person demonstrates remarkable inner resilience, embodying someone who may fall many times but always finds the strength to rise again [רד״ק, מאירי].
