תהלים, פרק מ״ח, פסוק י״ד

Psalms 48:14Sefaria

A physical tour of Jerusalem's walls and palaces is not merely an architectural survey, but a profound spiritual and historical experience designed to anchor faith and transmit God's greatness to future generations. The initial call is to focus one's mind entirely on observing the city. The primary approach among commentators is that this involves examining the city's fortifications. Some specify that this refers to the lower, outer wall surrounding the main defensive wall [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם], while others view it as a general survey of the walls and fortresses [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מאירי]. Taking a different perspective, the focus shifts from the architecture to the people, suggesting that attention should be placed on the vast multitudes filling the city [אלשיך]. A Midrashic tradition adds another layer, hinting at a future time when God will lead a joyous dance for the righteous [מנחת שי].

Moving inward to the palaces, commentators differ on what action is required. One approach sees a practical command to build, elevate, and reinforce these grand structures [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. The second approach interprets this as a command of observation and experience, urging onlookers to gaze at towering palaces that resemble mountain peaks [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מלבי״ם], climb their grand staircases [מאירי], or wander among them to truly absorb their beauty [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The ultimate purpose of this deep observation is to document and transmit the city's splendor and power to future generations who will not have the privilege of seeing the magnificent structures with their own eyes [רש״י, רד״ק]. Beyond preserving the memory of physical beauty, this retelling serves as a testimony that this mighty construction was achieved with God's help. By recognizing the awe-inspiring architecture, future generations will come to recognize the Architect Himself, the Creator of the world [מצודת דוד, מאירי].

On a deeper level, this survey of the city reveals miraculous and cosmic dimensions. The sheer volume of people and buildings points to an open miracle, as the city contained masses far beyond its natural physical capacity. The palaces seemed to miraculously rise and suspend in the air, a wonder intended to plant unshakable faith in Israel for the future [אלשיך]. Philosophically, observing the structure of Mount Zion and its palaces is a way to understand the order of all reality. The design of the Temple and the city parallels the very structure of the universe. By studying their forms and underlying laws, a person can achieve a complete and perfect recognition of God's existence and His glory [מאירי].
