תהלים, פרק נ״ט, פסוק א׳

Psalms 59:1Sefaria

A moment of extreme peril and dramatic escape serves as the foundation for this Psalm. The opening acts as both a historical marker of survival and a desperate plea for rescue, sharing the same introductory style as the three preceding chapters [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The title of the song itself reflects a man standing on the edge of death and ruin, begging for mercy to spare his life [רש״י]. This is also understood as a direct and urgent prayer, asking God to intervene and stop Saul from destroying him [מלבי״ם].

The historical backdrop involves a calculated assassination plot. Saul dispatched agents to surround David's home during the night. Their orders were to guard the premises to prevent any escape, with the ultimate goal of executing him at dawn [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, during that tense night, David's wife Michal recognized the looming threat. She stalled the guards by claiming David was ill and then managed to smuggle him to safety through a window [רש״י, מאירי]. It was in the aftermath of this harrowing escape that David composed the entire prayer [מאירי].

Beneath the surface of this political intrigue lies a profound display of hidden divine providence. God orchestrated the events without overriding human free will. He planted a subtle thought in Saul's mind to delay the execution until morning, opting merely to guard the house overnight. This crucial delay is exactly what provided Michal with the window of time needed to assess the danger and orchestrate the escape. Had Saul ordered an immediate and sudden strike, a natural escape would have been impossible, and survival would have required an overt miracle [אלשיך, חומת אנך].

The structure of the ensuing Psalm closely mirrors the actual sequence of these events. It begins by reflecting on an earlier moment of survival when Saul hurled a spear at David. The focus then shifts to the nighttime ambush surrounding his home and his desperate prayers for deliverance from the guards, finally concluding with a harsh condemnation of his enemies [מלבי״ם].
