תהלים, פרק נ״ט, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 59:3Sefaria

הַ֭צִּילֵנִי מִפֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָ֑וֶן וּֽמֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י דָ֝מִ֗ים הוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃

David faces a complex threat from his enemies, prompting a cry for divine help that carefully distinguishes between different types of danger and the specific protection needed for each. The primary approach among commentators is that his prayer is directed against the ambushers who actively sought his life and plotted his death [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].

Taking a more specific historical view, these threats can be divided into two distinct groups. The first group consists of the guards who surrounded David's house to trap him. The second group is King Saul and his loyalists, whose ultimate goal was to murder David and completely wipe out his future descendants [אלשיך].

Beyond the historical identities of these enemies, there is a profound difference in the way they operate and the type of divine help required to defeat them. One type of enemy works in the shadows, plotting quietly or spreading harmful slander. Because these hidden threats often go unnoticed by the victim, God is asked to provide a quiet rescue, foiling the secret plots before they can ever be put into action. In contrast, the second type of enemy operates out in the open. These are violent attackers who confront their target directly with murderous intent. Facing such a direct, warlike assault requires a different kind of divine response. Against these visible attackers, God is asked to bring salvation, securing an active and forceful victory [מלבי״ם].
