תהלים, פרק פ״ח, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 88:3Sefaria

תָּב֣וֹא לְ֭פָנֶיךָ תְּפִלָּתִ֑י הַטֵּ֥ה אׇ֝זְנְךָ֗ לְרִנָּתִֽי׃

A person caught in deep distress often seeks a direct, unmediated connection with God. This desperate plea reflects a strong desire for the prayer to reach God Himself, bypassing any angels and breaking through the barriers and clouds that sometimes block prayers from ascending. In moments of severe trouble, when it feels as though the protective merit of past ancestors has completely run out, a person's salvation depends entirely on God directly hearing and answering their call [אלשיך].

When approaching God, there is a recognized distinction between a standard prayer and a more intense cry. One perspective suggests this difference lies in how the person expresses themselves. Standard prayer represents the internal thoughts and intentions of the heart, while the cry is the outward expression spoken aloud with the mouth and tongue [אבן עזרא]. Another approach focuses on the intensity of the pain. A cry represents a much higher and stronger level of distress than an ordinary prayer. Because of this, a person asks merely that their regular prayer come before God. However, when sorrow overwhelms them and they are forced to cry out, they beg God not to wait for the sound to reach Him. Instead, they ask Him to actively intervene and lean in, inclining His ear to hear their plea immediately [אלשיך].

Regarding the exact nature of this intense cry, the primary approach among commentators is that it is a loud shout born out of deep pain. Within this understanding, there are slight variations. Some view this cry specifically as a mournful lament [מלבי״ם], while others understand it as the unique, emotional melody that accompanies a heartfelt prayer [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
