Song of Songs 5:9Sefaria

A dramatic encounter unfolds as onlookers question the intense, almost desperate search of a woman for her hidden lover. Her profound longing sparks deep curiosity about who this mysterious figure is and what makes him so exceptional. Because the lover is not a public figure and their meetings are rare and secretive, others begin to wonder about his true nature and even his very existence [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Seeing the woman's urgent pleas and tireless efforts to find him, her companions realize this man is completely irreplaceable. They ask what makes him better than anyone else, seeking to understand the unique qualities that inspire such unmatched devotion

The primary approach among commentators views this dialogue as the historical debate between the nations of the world and the Israelites. The nations question the Israelites about the advantage of their God over other deities, wondering how His guidance differs from the spiritual forces governing the rest of the world Observing the Israelites suffering in exile, the nations assume God has abandoned them. They attempt to lure the Israelites into assimilation, arguing that other beliefs also offer protection and prosperity

When addressing the Israelites, the nations speak with great admiration, recognizing their unique virtues of intellect, compassion, and self-restraint. These qualities make them highly desirable to other cultures [ספורנו]. At the same time, this praise serves as a sharp reminder of the Israelites' glorious past, contrasting painfully with their current state of exile, where others enjoy far more worldly comforts [צרור המור].

What truly astonishes the nations is the absolute devotion of the Israelites. They watch in awe as the Israelites face death, fire, and severe persecution rather than abandon God, remaining fiercely loyal to their last breath. This staggering level of sacrifice compels the nations themselves to acknowledge the extraordinary power of the love between the Israelites and God

Taking a different approach, the conversation can also be understood as an internal struggle within a single person. The physical body challenges the soul, asking how the spiritual yearning for God differs from ordinary, earthly desires. It questions what makes God so magnificent that the soul would pursue Him even to the point of death [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this deep internal reflection serves to recognize God's greatness, bringing all of a person's physical and emotional forces into complete, loving submission to Him [רלב״ג].
