A piercing prophetic vision reveals the absolute finality of the divine decree regarding the approaching exile of the Israelites. In this fourth vision experienced by the prophet Amos, directed as proof to Amaziah, a stark shift occurs. Unlike earlier prophecies that hinted at a partial punishment affecting only certain tribes, this vision signals a complete and final end for the entire nation [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
At the center of this vision is an image of summer fruit in a container. The primary approach among commentators is that this container is a regular, perhaps large, basket [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The produce consists of summer fruit, specifically figs [ביאור שטיינזלץ], that have been dried in the sun during the hot months [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. However, another perspective suggests the container is not a standard basket at all, but rather a netted cage used by hunters to trap birds or hold dead prey [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. This creates a highly unusual scene: dried figs, which are normally kept in standard baskets, are instead placed inside a hunter's cage. This jarring contrast serves to show that God's decree is sealed and completely inescapable [מלבי״ם].
A deeper symbolic layer emerges from the specific type of fruit shown. The vision portrays a basket filled with late-season figs that are no longer fit to eat [רש״י]. This serves as a harsh metaphor for the condition of the people, drawing a deep connection between the idea of summer fruit and the arrival of a final end. At the beginning of the fig season, high-quality fruits are sold carefully, counted or weighed out individually. But at the end of the season, as the quality severely drops and the quantity increases, they are sold in massive bulk, filling entire baskets at once. In the same way, the Israelites are compared to these spoiled, end-of-season figs. God will not hand them over to their enemies little by little in a series of partial exiles. Instead, He will deliver them all at once, like a single overflowing basket, in a total and absolute exile [אברבנאל].
