עמוס, פרק ח׳, פסוק י״א

Amos 8:11Sefaria

A profound spiritual crisis is about to unfold, framed not as a lack of physical food or water, but as a desperate, unfulfilled craving for divine communication. A time is coming when the most intense human need will be the desire to hear from God.

The root of this spiritual starvation lies in how the people treated prophets in the past. Because they rejected God's message, refused to listen, and actively demanded that prophets stop speaking, the consequence will be an exact reflection of their behavior. God will send a famine, and the people will deeply crave the very prophecy they once pushed away, yet they will not be able to find it [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. This famine signifies the withdrawal of the Holy Spirit and the complete cessation of prophecy among the Israelites [רש״י]. Much like a starving and thirsty person who roams endlessly in a desperate search for physical nourishment, the Israelites will wander in a futile search for the word of God [רד״ק].

Regarding when and where this takes place, there is agreement that it involves periods when the Divine Presence is withdrawn. The famine will strike first and foremost in the land of Israel, whether in the kingdom of the ten tribes, in Judah, or in both. Moreover, because prophecy rests exclusively in the land of Israel, once the people are exiled and wander across the globe, they will be unable to find prophetic vision anywhere [אברבנאל]. Some trace this specific period to the days of the exile [מצודת דוד], while others point to the Second Temple era. During that time, after the passing of the final prophets such as Malachi, prophecy ceased. Although lesser forms of divine inspiration and heavenly voices were still utilized, the direct word of God became exceedingly rare, leaving the people thirsty and begging to hear from Him [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

While the primary approach views this famine as a severe punishment for rejecting the prophets, another perspective reveals an element of comfort hidden within the crisis. Following harsh warnings of anger and destruction, there is an underlying promise that a time will eventually arrive when a sincere and genuine desire to hear the word of God will finally awaken within the nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
