עמוס, פרק ט׳, פסוק ד׳

Amos 9:4Sefaria

The attempt to flee from Divine judgment is ultimately an exercise in futility. Even surrendering one's freedom and embracing exile offers no safe haven. Some individuals might willingly surrender to their enemies, handing themselves over to captivity in the desperate hope that such submission will awaken mercy and spare their lives [מצודת דוד]. Historically, this mirrors the group led by Yochanan ben Kareach, who willingly went down to Egypt to avoid famine and war, only to be overtaken by the very violence they sought to escape, just as the prophet Jeremiah had warned [רד״ק]. This reality finalizes a harsh decree: no refugee will survive. Even those survivors whom the enemy chooses to spare and take into captivity will not manage to cheat death [מלבי״ם].

The destruction that follows them into captivity is far from random. God will actively decree their downfall, ensuring that they are met with death even while in exile. Their fate is managed by direct Divine providence rather than being left to mere chance [מלבי״ם]. Yet, this process of punishment also hints at a final, positive outcome. Just as water naturally rejects dirt and mud, forcing it to sink to the bottom, the systematic removal of the wicked will ultimately pave the way for lasting relief [מצודת דוד].

When God directs His gaze and attention toward a person, that focus can inherently bring about either blessing or ruin [אבן עזרא]. In this situation, His attention is strictly directed toward their downfall. This intense focus guarantees that Divine providence will lock onto them, delivering a precise and carefully supervised punishment [מלבי״ם].
