Ecclesiastes 1:10Sefaria

Human history is filled with moments of sudden discovery, where an event or invention appears so groundbreaking that it feels entirely unprecedented. People often declare these rare occurrences as brand-new additions to the world. However, a deeper look reveals that the core essence of these seemingly novel things has existed since the distant past. It is simply a lack of historical memory that makes them appear fresh and original [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Even when an event is highly unusual, its underlying nature remains the same familiar essence from eras long past, merely wearing a changed outward appearance [אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Recognizing this truth is meant to prevent a false sense of reality. It stops people from mistakenly believing that the fundamental rules of the universe have shifted, or that human effort will suddenly produce completely new outcomes [מצודת דוד].

Beyond the natural world, this principle extends into the spiritual realm and the distant future. When the great wonders of the ultimate redemption unfold, such as the resurrection of the dead, they might be perceived as a completely new creation. Yet, even these miraculous events rely on historical precedents, reflecting miracles of the past, like the resurrection performed by Elijah the Prophet [תעלומות חכמה]. Furthermore, the very idea of eternal life is not a new concept, as Elijah himself ascended to heaven and continues to live forever without change [אלשיך].

Another profound example is the future Third Temple. Although it is destined to be a spiritual structure descending from heaven, appearing as a complete innovation compared to the physical temples of the past, it is not actually new. It was already formed and existed in the higher realms long before the physical world was even created [אלשיך]. This timeless reality applies equally to the world of Torah study. Whenever a dedicated student arrives at a deep conclusion or uncovers a seemingly fresh insight, it is never a true invention. The roots and core principles of every future ruling were already given to Moses at Mount Sinai, waiting patiently to be rediscovered by later generations [תורה תמימה].
