Ezekiel 16:57Sefaria

A tragic missed opportunity for repentance sealed the fate of Jerusalem. Rather than learning from the downfall of other sinful places like Sodom, the people continued their moral decline until their shame was exposed for all to see. There was a time when the city still maintained an outward appearance of justice. During this period, the people seemingly held onto the word of God and even went so far as to rebuke others for their wrongdoings [מצודת דוד]. The ultimate tragedy is that the nation failed to change its course and absorb the necessary lessons before its own crimes were brought into the light

The primary approach among commentators anchors this public exposure and subsequent punishment in the historical reign of King Ahaz. During his rule, the people of Judah began to sin openly and with increasing intensity. As a direct result, God handed the nation over to the armies of Aram and the Philistines. In this context, the surrounding enemy cities are poetically understood as daughters [מצודת ציון]. These nations inflicted heavy military losses on Judah. Towns were captured, and residents were taken captive, transforming the once proud nation into an object of disgrace within the enemy territories

This devastating military defeat brought with it deep humiliation from neighboring nations. Judah was surrounded on all sides by the cities of Aram and the Philistines, who provoked the people and looted their homes. The enemy nations looked upon Judah's trampled and immoral culture with intense contempt, mockery, and disgust This profound level of scorn is likened to the deep disdain Esau felt when he rejected his birthright
