יחזקאל, פרק ט״ז, פסוק י״ח

Ezekiel 16:18Sefaria

The ultimate tragedy of betrayal occurs when a benefactor's own gifts are used against them. The Israelites, compared to an unfaithful wife, display profound ingratitude by taking the precious gifts God bestowed upon them and using them for idolatry.

Commentators offer two angles on how she misuses her clothing. On a practical level, she takes her garments and drapes them over the idols she has crafted [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Going even further, after already using her other clothes to build altars, she strips off her embroidered garment—her innermost tunic that rests directly against her skin—and wraps the statues in it [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, looking through the metaphor of the unfaithful wife, she uses her luxurious wardrobe to dress her lovers, hoping to make them look more appealing and to win their affection [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

She then takes the oil and the blended spices meant to be burned for a pleasant fragrance [מצודת ציון]. These precious items were given to her by God and rightfully belong to Him, yet she presents them as an offering to her idols and lovers [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A piercing message from God is embedded in the way the text records this offering. While the tradition reads the action as a direct accusation that the woman herself gave the oil and incense to the idols, the written text spells the word as though God is stating that He gave them. This hints at a painful reality: it is as if God Himself placed the offerings before the statues. The very abundance and goodness He showered upon her are exactly what fueled her rebellion. It is much like an animal that kicks its owner precisely because it has been fed so well [רד״ק].
