יחזקאל, פרק ט״ז, פסוק ב׳

Ezekiel 16:2Sefaria

בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם הוֹדַ֥ע אֶת־יְרוּשָׁלַ֖͏ִם אֶת־תּוֹעֲבֹתֶֽיהָ׃

A piercing prophetic message acts as a mirror, forcing a nation to confront the depth of its moral decay and betrayal. Even though the prophet sits far away in the Babylonian exile, his sharp rebuke is aimed directly at Jerusalem [אברבנאל]. Because the northern kingdom of Israel has already been destroyed, Jerusalem stands alone as the sole representative of the entire nation's history [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The prophet is tasked with more than just passing along information. He must actively challenge the people, clearly expose their behavior [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ], and make them fully realize the severe reality of their situation [מצודת דוד].

The true nature of their corruption is understood through the massive gap between God's kindness and the nation's ingratitude. The relationship between God and the people is compared to a generous man walking through a desert who discovers an abandoned, helpless baby girl. He takes pity on her, raises her, and eventually marries her, providing her with every blessing. Yet, instead of showing gratitude, she forgets His devotion and deliberately betrays Him [מלבי״ם]. The prophet is instructed to lay out this entire picture: the immense kindness God gave them, the reality of their sins against Him, and the harsh consequences that must follow [אברבנאל].

The root of this widespread failure is traced back to the toxic influence of their surroundings. The people absorbed the shameful beliefs and behaviors of the local nations, becoming so deeply influenced that it was as if they were physically born to Amorite and Hittite parents in the land of Canaan [אברבנאל]. However, a more spiritual perspective views the mention of their physical origins as a subtle act of divine mercy. Unlike pure angels who have no way to fix their mistakes if they fail, human beings are intentionally created from physical matter to make their judgment less severe. The natural struggles of the physical world and the pull of human desires act as mitigating factors for their failures. By reminding the people of their earthly foundation, the rebuke actually finds merit for them, offering a genuine path toward repentance and forgiveness [אדרת אליהו].
