יחזקאל, פרק ט״ז, פסוק י״ב

Ezekiel 16:12Sefaria

The relationship between God and the Israelites is beautifully compared to the gifting of luxurious jewelry. These adornments serve not as mere physical decorations, but as symbols of spiritual gifts, divine protection, and a system of Commandments.

The first of these gifts is a nose ring [מצודת ציון]. Symbolically, this represents the Ark of the Covenant, which was placed centrally within the nation [רש״י, רד״ק]. Another perspective views this facial adornment as a representation of the Commandments that engage the senses of smell and sight, expressing a deep spiritual perception and an awe of God [מלבי״ם].

Next are the earrings, which draw their Hebrew name from their circular shape [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. In a spiritual sense, these round jewels symbolize the Clouds of Glory that fully encircled and protected the Israelites [רש״י]. Alternatively, they represent the Commandments that depend on the sense of hearing [מלבי״ם]. This carries a specific warning to protect oneself from listening to forbidden things. The physical design of the earlobe, which is soft and round, allows a person to fold it inward to block out harmful sounds. By guarding what enters the ear, a person naturally prevents forbidden speech from leaving their mouth [אדרת אליהו].

Finally, the imagery concludes with a magnificent crown placed upon the head [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This crown symbolizes the beautiful Commandments, good laws, and fair statutes that God granted to the Israelites [מצודת דוד]. Other perspectives see this crown as an expression of supreme divine leadership and guidance. It represents an angelic messenger walking ahead to lead the nation [רש״י], or the Divine Presence itself resting upon the people, elevating them to a profound spiritual height [אדרת אליהו].
