יַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־[זָכַרְתְּ֙] (זכרתי) אֶת־יְמֵ֣י נְעוּרַ֔יִךְ וַתִּרְגְּזִי־לִ֖י בְּכׇל־אֵ֑לֶּה וְגַם־אֲנִ֨י הֵ֜א דַּרְכֵּ֣ךְ ׀ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ נָתַ֗תִּי נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֔ה וְלֹ֤א (עשיתי) [עָשִׂית֙] אֶת־הַזִּמָּ֔ה עַ֖ל כׇּל־תּוֹעֲבֹתָֽיִךְ׃

The severe punishments falling upon the nation are not arbitrary, but rather the tragic result of deep forgetfulness and ingratitude that spiraled into ongoing betrayal. Addressed as a wayward woman, the nation is reminded of the root of her failure: she completely forgot the days of her youth. This forgetfulness represents a willful ignorance of the early kindness and favors God bestowed upon the Israelites at the beginning of their journey, particularly His saving them from Egypt [מצודת דוד, רד"ק].

Ignoring this foundational history led to severe, offensive actions. The provocation against God went far beyond ordinary anger; it created a profound shock and a deep disruption of peace, directly caused by the nation's repulsive behavior [מלבי"ם, מצודת ציון, רד"ק]. In response, God declares that the coming suffering and destruction will be an exact measure-for-measure reaction. The punishment is a direct consequence of their actions, matching the severity of their sins with perfect legal precision [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The final indictment against the nation presents a fascinating debate regarding the nature of their ultimate failure. One approach focuses on their lack of reflection. According to this view, the nation is accused of a complete failure to think or take counsel. Despite their many abominations and the constant warnings of the prophets, they never stopped to reflect, never considered returning in repentance, and never took it to heart to repair the relationship with God, who had been so good to them [רש"י, רד"ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, another perspective views their failure through the lens of active wickedness and deep immorality. From this viewpoint, the nation is confronted with a sharp rhetorical question: did they not also commit extreme depravity and corruption on top of all their other repulsive deeds?
