יחזקאל, פרק י״ט, פסוק י״א

Ezekiel 19:11Sefaria

The imagery of a towering, mighty vine captures the peak glory and unmatched power of a thriving kingdom. Rather than growing close to the earth as expected, this vine reaches extraordinary heights, dominating the landscape and rising above everything around it.

The primary approach among commentators is that the vine's thick, strong branches represent firm governance, mighty kings, and a distinguished dynasty of leaders emerging from the kingdom of Judah. This government possessed the strength to firmly subdue and crush any rebellion [מצודת דוד]. Within this structure of power, a subtle distinction exists regarding the nature of its authority. Certain branches represent the official office and authority of the monarchy itself, while others symbolize sheer military might and the commanders of the army [מלבי״ם]. Additionally, this immense strength was not solely internal, as it extended outward through strategic political alliances forged with the rulers of surrounding nations [מלבי״ם].

The vine's growth is highly unusual. It surges upward, weaving through the tangled, braided foliage of heavily branched trees [רש״י, מצודת ציון], until it overtops the highest canopy. Its stature towers above all the upper boughs of the surrounding forest [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Because such towering growth is unnatural for a standard vine, it symbolizes the dramatic resurgence and flourishing of the monarchy during the era of King Josiah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another perspective views this proud, upward surge as an act of defiance. The vine grew tall in direct opposition to the will of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, who originally planted it with the strict intention that it remain low and spread humbly across the ground [מלבי״ם].

Because of its immense height and large, thick branches [מצודת ציון], the towering vine could be seen from great distances. This striking visibility represents the kingdom's widespread fame and international renown, earned through its sheer power and heroism [מצודת דוד]. Such profound prosperity, marked by an abundance of respected ministers and valiant warriors, reflects a reality where the Davidic dynasty stood supreme. It towered over all foreign nations, leaving them entirely subordinate and subjected to its rule [רד״ק].
