Ezekiel 19:3Sefaria

The image of a lion cub raised to greatness serves as a historical and spiritual lament over the tragic path of one of the kings of Judah. Commentators agree that this metaphor points directly to Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah. In his youth, the people of the land elevated him and placed him on the throne Although he achieved power, he is compared to a young lion rather than a fully grown one. This reflects the reality of his rule: his kingdom was small and limited, as much of the land already lay in ruins [רד״ק].

Over time, a gradual process of corruption took hold. The young king slowly adapted to destructive habits that went against his very nature [מצודת ציון]. The imagery of the lion turning to eat humans represents a severe break in the natural order. Normally, a lion avoids preying on people because God instilled a natural fear of humanity within the animal kingdom, unless the beast is in extreme distress However, once a predator tastes human flesh, it develops a permanent craving and will continually provoke and attack people [רש״י].

This unnatural act carries several layers of meaning. The primary approach among commentators is that the human prey represents the nation of Israel itself. Initially, Jehoahaz formed a habit of fighting and oppressing other nations. Eventually, this violent tendency overtook him, and he crossed a dangerous line by turning on his own citizens. He began to rob and oppress his own people, leading them down a path of doing evil in the eyes of God

From a political perspective, this aggressive behavior points to his dangerous provocation of a major superpower. Jehoahaz chose to fight the king of Egypt, a ruler far stronger than himself. This reckless decision ultimately led to his capture and imprisonment by Pharaoh Necho On a deeper, more hidden level, the act of the lion consuming humans symbolizes profound spiritual damage. It represents impure forces preying upon and swallowing the spiritual vitality and holy sparks of the people of Israel [חומת אנך].
