Genesis 43:25Sefaria

Anticipating a fateful encounter, the brothers wait inside the Egyptian ruler's home. They use the quiet moments before the shared afternoon meal to properly organize themselves and their offerings. Their preparations unfold on two distinct levels, addressing both the physical presentation of their tribute and their own spiritual readiness.

The primary approach among commentators is that the brothers focused on the aesthetic arrangement of the gifts they brought from Canaan. Since the fruits had already been gathered, their current task was not to assemble the offering anew, but to set it up in a manner fitting for royalty The long journey, with the produce packed inside sacks and carried on donkeys, had taken a toll on the external beauty of the fruits To remedy this, the brothers carefully decorated the items, organizing them flawlessly and placing them into fine vessels. This ensured the tribute could be presented with the utmost respect the moment the ruler walked through the doors

The brothers worked quickly to finish these arrangements by noon, acting on advance information. Although the ruler typically arrived later in the day, the house steward or the staff preparing the feast had informed them of his early arrival Learning that they would be staying to eat provided the perfect setting to offer their present [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The meal they anticipated was not restricted to baked goods; rather, it was a complete banquet encompassing all the different dishes that would be served [רד״ק].

In contrast to this physical focus, an entirely different perspective suggests their preparations were spiritual in nature. According to this view, the preparation was not about a physical tribute, but rather the afternoon prayer. Recognizing that they were about to sit down for a large feast, the brothers realized they needed to pray first. It is improper to begin a significant meal close to the time of the afternoon prayer without having already completed the prayer, prompting them to fulfill this spiritual obligation before the ruler arrived [חומת אנך].
