וְאֶת־[מוּסַ֨ךְ] (מיסך) הַשַּׁבָּ֜ת אֲשֶׁר־בָּנ֣וּ בַבַּ֗יִת וְאֶת־מְב֤וֹא הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַֽחִיצ֔וֹנָה הֵסֵ֖ב בֵּ֣ית יְהֹוָ֑ה מִפְּנֵ֖י מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃

Driven by political fear and a desperate need for personal security against the King of Assyria, King Ahaz executes dramatic structural changes to the House of God and its surrounding access routes. These alterations fundamentally shift the purpose of the holy site, transforming it from a vibrant spiritual center into a fortified, private passageway.

One major alteration involves a covered structure, such as a tent or canopy, located in the courtyard [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This structure was originally built to provide shade and a resting area for the priests and guards finishing their Sabbath shifts. Because their duties ended earlier in the day but they could not return home until evening, they would stay in this sheltered space [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Ahaz completely dismantles and removes this protective covering [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].

Ahaz also modifies the main, external entrance that connects the royal palace to the House of God [רש״י, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. He blocks this exposed outer pathway and redirects the route inward. As a result, the only way to access his palace is directly through the House of God [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ].

These drastic measures are driven entirely by a fear of the Assyrian king. The primary approach among commentators is that these changes serve as security and defense tactics. By altering the architecture, Ahaz aims to prevent a surprise attack from the outside, secure a hiding place within the sanctuary, or establish a secret escape route if necessary [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the concealment is intended to prevent the King of Assyria from seeing and eventually coveting the sacred vessels inside [רש״י].

The impact of these architectural shifts is severe. By turning the House of God into a private, secured transit route for his own safety, Ahaz effectively blocks the flow of people coming and going for the holy service. This disruption ultimately leads to the tragic closing of the sanctuary doors, the extinguishing of the sacred lamps, and the complete cancellation of the divine service [מלבי״ם].
