שמואל ב, פרק י״ט, פסוק ל״ח

II Samuel 19:38Sefaria

יָשׇׁב־נָ֤א עַבְדְּךָ֙ וְאָמֻ֣ת בְּעִירִ֔י עִ֛ם קֶ֥בֶר אָבִ֖י וְאִמִּ֑י וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ עַבְדְּךָ֣ כִמְהָ֗ם יַֽעֲבֹר֙ עִם־אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַעֲשֵׂה־ל֕וֹ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ט֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ {ס}

An aging loyalist receives the invitation of a lifetime from his monarch, yet chooses the quiet comfort of his ancestral home over the splendor of the royal palace. Barzillai the Gileadite politely declines King David's offer to relocate to Jerusalem and live within the royal court. Instead, he simply asks for permission to return to his own city after fulfilling his duty of escorting the king across the Jordan River [רד״ק]. His choice is rooted in a natural desire to spend his final days in familiar surroundings, so that he may eventually die and be laid to rest alongside his parents [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, recognizing the king's genuine wish to repay his past loyalty, Barzillai proposes an alternative. He presents Chimham, whom commentators universally identify as his son, suggesting that the proper way for the king to show his gratitude is to direct it toward the next generation [מצודת דוד]. Because the son is much younger, he has the vitality to truly appreciate and enjoy the privileges of living in the king's household—an experience the elderly father can no longer relish [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Passing this royal favor to the son aligns with the natural principles of inheritance, where a child steps into the father's place and assumes his rightful privileges [מלבי״ם]. Beyond the practical aspect of a generational transition, this arrangement holds a deeper hidden meaning. Integrating the son into the royal court is not merely a technical substitution. It serves as a spiritual continuation of the father himself, ultimately bringing a profound sense of completion to his soul [חומת אנך].
